A HENLEY salon owner has been named Southern Hairdresser of the Year.
Ryan Nicoletti-Dowd, of Wigg in Reading Road, won the title at Hairdressing Journal’s British Hairdressing Awards held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London’s Park Lane.
Mr Nicoletti-Dowd, 34, who opened the salon in March last year, said: “It was amazing just to be a finalist so to actually win was a great feeling.
“To open a business and be nominated for an award like this so soon afterwards is almost unheard of. It’s such an achievement for the whole team.”
The other five finalists included Bruno Marc Giamattei, who owns Marc Antoni in Hart Street and has twice won the title.
The finalists had to submit four photographs of hairstyles which were judged by a panel of industry experts.
Mr Nicoletti-Dowd was accompanied to the awards ceremony by the Wigg hairdressing team and his wife, Claudia, who works in advertising. The couple live in Fair Mile, Henley, with their son Lorenzo, two.
Mr Nicoletti-Dowd, who has previously won a L’Oreal professional colour trophy, said: “I want to continue raising the salon’s profile within the industry and start working on our new collection in the New Year.”
He has been a hairdresser for 18 years, working first at a salon in Wokingham and then a West End salon for five years. He worked in a Henley salon for about 18 months before going it alone.
About 1,700 guests from the worlds of hairdressing, fashion and media attended the 28th annual awards, which were compered by comedy actor David Walliams.
Marc Antoni was nominated for artistic team of the year and the salon’s Becci Giacopazzi was nominated for colour technician of the year.
