Rowers in dead heat behind bar
Published 03/12/12

MORE than 150 people attended the official opening of the Henley Brewhouse pub and microbrewery in Market Place.

Guests of honour were Olympic rowing medallists Alex Gregory and Zac Purchase, who took part in a pint-pulling competition that resulted in a dead heat.

Head brewer James Godman showed visitors, including Mayor Elizabeth Hodgkin, around the glass-walled microbrewery, which brews three beers and will produce up to 2,000 pints a week.

Head chef Sacha Henry served food samples from the pub’s menu, including mini fish and chips and mini-burgers, while Graeme Sutherland, of wine supplier Bibendum, gave a talk about the wine list.

The pub, which is in the former police station, is owned by business partners David Bruce and Clive Watson, who used to own the Capital Pub Company before selling it to Greene King for 93 million.

Meanwhile, the Queen Victoria, formerly known as The Victoria, will open tomorrow.
