MOST of the Henley areaís millionaires have become richer in the past 12 months.

Twelve people with links to the town or surrounding villages appear in this yearís Sunday Times Rich List.

Together they are valued at £3.43 billion, about £74 million more than their net worth last year.

But despite the fact that nine have either increased or maintained their fortunes, all but one have dropped in the rankings.

The richest is Swiss financier and hotelier Urs Schwarzenbach, whose net worth stands at £860 million.

He is 115th on the list, down from joint 102nd last year, when he was worth £850 million.

Mr Schwarzenbach, of Shiplake, has owned Hambleden village since 2007 and also owns Culham Court in Remenham.

In second place locally is supermarket boss David Sainsbury, who along with his family is Britainís 188th richest person.

Baron Sainsbury of Turville, who was made a life peer by the last Labour government, is valued at £540 million.

Last year he was worth £590m and was joint 150th on the list.

Sir Martyn Arbib is at number 273 on the list and is worth £350 million. This is £30 million more than last year, when he was 268th.

Sir Martyn made his fortune when he sold his Henley-based Perpetual fund management group to Amvescap for £1.05 billion in 2000, earning him £313 million.

He is a major benefactor of the River and Rowing Museum although he no longer lives in Henley.

The McAlpine family, who run the biggest construction company in the country, are 290th on the list with a £325 million fortune.

Last year they were worth £295m but were two places higher. Sir William McAlpine and his wife Judith live on their estate at Fawley Hill.

Michael Heseltine, former MP for Henley, and his family are 337th with £278 million.

Last year they were joint 311th with £264 million.

House-builder Michael Shanly, from Hurley, has seen his wealth increase by £87 million to £265 million since last year, taking him from 453rd place to joint 350th.

Olivia Harrison and her son Dhani are worth £190 million, £10 million more than last year, but have dropped from 434th to 495th.

Russian financier Andrey Borodinís fortune has dropped £70 million to £180 million, taking him from 319th to 514th. He was granted asylum in the UK in February last year, six months after buying Park Place in Remenham for a record £140 million.

Peppard couple Tony and Barbara Laithwaite, who own mail order firm Direct Wines, are 637th with a net worth of £148m.

Last year they had £125 million and ranked 631st.

Singer George Michael, who owns a house in Goring, has kept his £105 million fortune but is now 846th, down 95 places.

Former F1 Mercedes team principal Ross Brawn, of Stoke Row, is still worth £100 million but has dropped from 777th to 863rd.

Reading FC chairman Sir John Madejskiís fortune has dropped from £100 million to £90 million and he now ranks 947th, down 170 places.

In 2012 he was valued at £150 million and placed 501st on the list.
