Sonning Common District News for 16th May 2008

'Mad Lizzie' puts pupils through their paces

Bishopswood School in Sonning Common held its inaugural exercise week with former GMTV fitness coach ‘Mad Lizzy’ Webb.

Pupils and their teachers were treated to a dance workout last Thursday (May 9th) to the hit single, Mercy by Duffy.

Lizzy, who spent ten years with a breakfast-time show, said: “I am a qualified teacher and I teach a number of classes within the area. I teach in prisons, schools and colleges. It’s an absolute pleasure to play such an active role within the community.

“ I came here two years ago with my partner in crime ‘Joggy Bear’, which was a series on Channel 4. It went down so well that the parents have asked me back.

“ This is the first time I have ever choreographed something like this. The routine has a lots of exercises but all can be done either standing up or sitting down — as some of the children are in wheelchairs.”

Parent, Susan Fotherby, who has a 13-year-old daughter at the school, was delighted with the event. “I think it’s very important. Children like these can’t go to the parks or even kick a football around without being supervised. So organising something like this is absolutely fantastic.”

Sponsored play scheme boosts school funds

A holiday play scheme, based at Bishopswood School in Sonning Common, featured a sponsored fancy dress party during the April school holidays.

The Guideposts Trust Holiday Play Scheme raised £150, which will go towards the children and the upkeep of the club, that runs for 14 weeks of the year.

Team leader, Diana Layfield, said: “We are an all-inclusive play scheme that offers all-year-round holiday care for children aged three to 16 years.

“ We have facilities to cater for all children including those with special needs. And we will take in children from anywhere — not just Sonning Common.

“ We are a registered charity that is Ofsted inspected, with experienced and qualified staff.”

The Guideposts Trust offer a range of activities during each holiday, from, trips out, arts and crafts, cooking, face painting and indoor and outdoor games.

The club runs from 9 a.m to 4 p.m at a cost of £20 per day all-inclusive. For further information contact Diana Layfield on 0791 2994158.

Children lay on special birthday surprise for a very special lady

Children at Peppard Primary School held a special assembly to celebrate a landmark birthday.

Valerie Phelps, a staunch supporter of the school in her role as governor and in running the weekly Latin club, was treated to a surprise 70th birthday celebration.

Pupils at the school paid tribute in the form of various musical renditions and readings. In honour of Valerie’s love for both Latin and Mozart, they sang Ave Verum Corpus, along with the more traditional Happy Birthday.

“ Valerie Phelps is very much part of Peppard Primary School,” said governor
Rosie Clinkard. “There is not a single child in the school who doesn’t know her and likewise Valerie knows every child by name. She attends all our school events with her ever-present smile and accompanies us on numerous school outings. We all wanted to show our appreciation for the sterling work that she does,” she added.
