Harrison’s no to OBE
Published 30/12/13

GEORGE HARRISON turned down an OBE in 2000, it has been revealed.

The former Beatle, who lived in Henley from 1970 until his death in 2001, was on the New Year Honours list but rejected the offer as bandmate Paul McCartney had been knighted three years previously.

Journalist and author Ray Connolly, who knew the band, said Harrison would have seen the offer of an OBE rather than a knighthood as “extraordinarily insensitive” and would have felt “insulted”.

Harrison’s citation for the OBE also made no reference to his songwriting for The Beatles, describing him as “a member of a band that many would say is the best thing that Britain has ever produced”.

Harrison wrote several songs for the band, including the hits Here Comes The Sun and Something.

In 1965, The Beatles were each awarded the MBE but John Lennon returned his four years later in protest at the Vietnam War. McCartney was knighted in 1997.
