The story of Solomon Northup who is abducted from his family and forced into slavery from acclaimed British director Steve McQueen.

Inside Llewyn Davis (15)

Starring: Meryl Streep, Julia Roberts, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ewan McGregor

Meryl Streep plays Violet, the pill-popping matriarch whose dysfunctional family reunites when her poet husband goes missing, presumed dead.

Capote (15)

Starring: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener, Bruce Greenwood, Chris Cooper

Novelist Truman Capote (Seymour Hoffman) becomes fascinated with a multiple murder in Kansas. While investigating events for his book In Cold Blood he falls in love with one of the murderers.

Streep is stellar as always in this at times disturbing, at times funny tableau of American family life at its worst.

A harrowing story sensitively told.

The Coen Brothers have not been nominated for any Oscars for this latest project, but get the thumbs-up from critics for producing a quality, intelligent look at the nature of creativity.

This is not a biopic of the great author, but a chronicle of love about a passionate but illicit affair.

A chance once more to see Seymour Hoffman, who tragically died in his New York apartment this week, at the height of his powers in this 2005 Oscar-winning performance.

The Invisible Woman (12A)
