Grim fairytale reworked for children’s Easter treat
Published 17/03/14

LP CREATIVES are bringing their new family theatre show Hansel and Gretel to the Kenton Theatre during the Easter holidays, on Thursday, April 17 at 11am and 2.30pm.

The show stars Margi Clarke as the wicked stepmother. Liverpool actress Margi has had a long career in TV and film, but is probably best known for her role as Tyrone Dobbs’ hard-up mum Jackie in Coronation Street.

The show also stars JezO as Hansel. JezO has been on CBBC shows like The Slammer and appeared at the Kenton Theatre recently with his father in the magician double act show WOW! This Show is Magic.

Jessica Hathaway, who has toured with Channel 5’s Milkshake and Tom Beard will also join Margi Clarke and JezO on stage to play Gretel and the wandering and wondering Minstrel.

A fun and light-hearted family show, based on the classic 19th century Brothers Grimm fairytale, Hansel and Gretel is the story of a brother and sister whose happy woodland life is interrupted by an unwelcome visitor.

The pair find themselves in a beautiful gingerbread house in the forest, where they discover that all is not as it seems and they have to ask their animal friends in the forest for help. Audiences should expect colourful sets and costumes, magic, puppetry and a full supporting cast.

Hansel and Gretel is directed by Lorna Chappell and written by Tom Beard and follows LP Creatives’ previous sell-out national tour of Fairytales of the Unexpected.

Writer and performer Tom Beard said: “This show is extremely fun and light hearted — a spectacular extravaganza for the senses. It is very important for children to receive exposure to the arts and this is why it is so important for us to produce a big family show each year. Hansel and Gretel will be a chance for all generations to spend time together at the theatre — not only does this time help strengthen the family bond but it helps to nurture a love of live theatre in the youngest of audience members.”

• Hansel and Gretel is at the Kenton Theatre on Thursday, April 17 at 11am and 2.30pm. For tickets go to www.kentontheatre.co.uk or call (01491) 575698.
