Wargrave water weekend

THE third annual Henley and Wargrave Boat Show takes place this weekend with organisers promising “something for everyone”.

The show, which was founded in 2012 as a boat sale, will be held at Val Wyatt Marine and Bushnells Marina in Wargrave on Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm.

Boats ranging from £200 day- sailers to larger cruisers will be on sale at the marinas in Willow Lane and Thameside and Hobbs of Henley will offer boat trips on the river between them.

Other attractions will include a bread-making workshop by chef Michael Brown and a Love Henley market with stalls selling a range of food, drink and artwork from local traders. Entry to the show is free.

Lisa Caddick, managing director of Val Wyatt, said: “In the past the show has very much been an open day, a chance to look at the boats. It was spread over quite a big area because some of it was held at the Hobbs boatyard in Henley.


“We thought this year it would be nice to be more centralised in Wargrave so it will be between us and Bushnells with Hobbs ferrying people back and forth. People can park up here, have a look around our marina and then go on a boat trip over to Bushnells and look at their place too.It’s nice to make it more of an event and actually get out on the water, which round here is beautiful and very relaxing.”

The first show in 2012 attracted more than 1,000 people and 13 boats were sold but last year’s event was hit by snow and fewer people attended.Mrs Caddick said the extra attractions this year were designed to encourage visitors and locals.

She said: “It’s a shame that here in Wargrave people aren’t aware how close we are to the river or what it offers. The marina community is a relatively small community so we want to get others interested. If you are less interested in the boats there will be something else here for you too.”

Twenty-five traders will have stalls at the marina, including Time for Tea, Cook Curry Club and Chiltern Lamb and the Horns pub in Crazies Hill will run a bar. Mr Brown’s Empower to Cook workshops will be held at 11am, 12.30pm and 2pm on both days and are free. To book a place, email info@lovehenley.com

Alison Hussey, who founded Love Henley last year, said: “It’s to promote traders within 25 miles as that’s how far you could travel by horse and cart in the old days. Most of the businesses are within five miles of Henley.

“This will be our spring event. We want to do a summer one at the regatta, an autumn one at the Greys Court harvest festival and a big Christmas event.”
