Kenton figures on the up
Published 27/05/14

THE Kenton Theatre reported another successful year at its annual meeting on Monday.

More than 60 people attended the meeting at the theatre in New Street, which is one of the oldest in the country.

Chairman Ed Simons presented the yearly summary to trustees before the theatre was opened to members and staff for a cabaret show by Luke Upton.

Mr Simons said: “We had a very successful AGM where we reported another surplus and the net assets at the theatre are now approaching 500,000.

“We have also had an increase in the number of people attending the theatre and the number of volunteers so all in all it’s been a pretty good year.

“After the AGM we opened up the theatre to friends, members and volunteers for the performance by Luke and had a very good evening.”

More than 150 people attended the show, including Sir William and Lady McAlpine, Reading FC chairman Sir John Madejski and the new mayor of Henley, Martin Akehurst.

Mr Simons said: “It was great to see Martin come down to support the theatre. He’s a thespian who has been up on the Kenton stage a few years ago and he had a great time.

“It’s always good to have support from anyone and [former mayor] Stefan [Gawrysiak] was a very good with the theatre during his tenure and also came along on Monday.

“Everyone knows of the problems we have had with the council but we are now in a new chapter and are working with them to come up with a new plan for illuminating the front of house.

“We are close to that now and once we put it in front of the council and get their blessing it can go to the district council.”

The theatre will also be holding a volunteer open day tomorrow (Saturday) to encourage more people to get involved with running the venue.

The theatre is run almost exclusively by volunteers and is looking for people to work front-of-house, in the bar and behind-the-scenes.

Mr Simons said: “We are a volunteer-based theatre and there are always opportunities for any age group. It’s a good first step if you see your future in the theatre or entertainment business so we encourage anyone to come along.”

The open day will take place from 10am to 1pm. To apply, email volunteers@kenton theatre.co.uk or download the volunteers’ form from www.kentontheatre.co.uk and post to the theatre.
