Guitarist recreates language of love
Published 02/06/14

THERE are still a few tickets available to see one of the world’s most celebrated classical guitarists John Williams perform live at the Hexagon next Friday, June 6.

Williams will be playing his version of Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez, a concerto which conjures up the palatial gardens at Aranjuez, and, as Rodrigo himself recalled: “the fragrance of magnolias, the singing of birds, and the gushing of fountains”.

Williams will play alongside the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in an evening which will also feature the Guitar Concerto by Stephen Goss, a work championed by John Williams, and premièred by the RPO in 2012.

As well as the trip to Spain with Rodrigo, the music will take the audience on a visit to southern Italy, with Elgar’s energetic and colourful In the South, painting images of sun-soaked hills, Roman Legions and the azure Mediterranean, as well as France, with Gershwin’s humorous work, An American in Paris.

John Williams’ first professional performance was at the Wigmore Hall in London on November 6, 1958. Since then, he has been performing throughout the world and has made regular appearances on radio and TV. He is noted for a technique that is often described as “virtually flawless”. Guitar historian Graham Wade has said: “John is perhaps the most technically accomplished guitarist the world has seen.”
