Don't ask for help on a Thursday... — Posted 5th November

Have you ever noticed that when something goes wrong, it happens in three's.

Last week we lost our broadband connection, and our once free internet provider's helpline has recently become a premuim line. Thanks!

This morning we overslept, and so did the children, for once!. After rushing around like headless chicken's trying to get them and myself dressed and lunch box's packed I finally got them in the car — only to discover the battery dead. Great!

My children don't do walking well, especially on the coldest day of the year. Plus we had to pick my son's friend up on the way. So three children, 3 lunch boxes, 2 book bags, 2 swimming kits, 2 mylittle ponies and a handbag later I finally got them all to school and myself to work.

A couple of days later I discovered very smelly water coming up in the soon to be new kitchen. A big problem as it has happened before, which generally means that no-one in the house hold can either have a bath or flush the toilet, let alone use the washing machine or wash up. Again a big problem in itself. Soon to become even bigger due to a SMALL gathering my husband kindly arranged, 36 adults and children in total, are due to ascend on us tomorrow for a firework party!!!

Thames water kindly came out and generously told me it was no longer their problem, even though it has been for the last 10 years, and we would have to call out another company. Which I duely did, twice!. The first time the drain man came he didn't stop because there was no where to park — I could of moved my car, if he had bothered to knock on the door and ask — and yes, it was fully functional again, thank you.

The second time he came round, he spent half an hour scratching his head, and his bottom I may add, trying to explain that he couldn't get his rod down the hole. I stopped myself from making a rude remark as after his vanishing act earlier my confidence in him was dwindling fast.

I decided to call it quits with this one and call another drain company.

This time he was very prompt and efficient, for the houses in the next street!!!

He kindly cleared the drain's for the road behind us and when he eventually did come and have a look down our drain, he exclaimed "it's blocked".

No s*** Sherlock. Well there was quite a bit, but I think we established that earlier.

Anyway, he did get his rods down and discovered the drain had collapsed and it would have to be repaired, which — yes, you've guessed — it wasn't his problem!

Thinking that this sounds expensive I asked my husband if he could ever so kindly go and dig a hole in the garden, find the collapsed drain and repair it.

I can't repeat what he said, but the gist of it was "NO".

I must mention that normally he is not quite so negative. His attitiude derives from cracking 2 ribs during a football match the week before. So asking him to go and dig a hole which could possibly result in a punctured lung, was probably not the best thing to ask of him.

Anyway to end this rant. We have broadband back, the car is fully charged and the drain has been found and repaired. Husband is still broken though.

Oh well, life would be boring if everything ran smoothly, but maybe once in a while it would be nice.
