THE first of the 2014 mini cross country events was hosted at Hall Place, Reading, in early June. This popular competition is designed for first time novice riders and horses and ponies in training.
The Talbot twins, Tom and Maisie from Maidenhead, followed on their showjumping success of the previous week to win the Popstar Pairs. Tom was riding 17-year-old Welsh A, Blue, and Maisie her new Welsh B pony, Kingsmead Campion. This was their first cross country although they compete as members of the Garth Hunt Pony Club Team. Maisie and Campion were also placed 4th in the Sesame Street Stakes. Archie Cloke, aged nine, from Streatley, was the winner riding Percy.
First place in the 2ft Muppet Mash went to Bampton rider Becky Coles with Jasper. She has owned and trained Jasper from a foal and this is their first season competing. Becky said: “It was quite a surprise to win. We were walking the next course when we heard the results and I ran back to get my rosette.”
Kingstown Bobby, aka Leo, was the winner of the last class with owner rider Millie Marbus. Leo is a nine-year-old Connemara which Millie has owned for a year. 15-year-old Millie from Winterbourne, Newbury, is a member of Vine Pony Club and is taking Leo to their first camp later in the summer. They will also be back to Hall Place for more shows.
Head coach Kate Turner was pleased with how the courses rode. They included some different routes and saw the new fences used for the first time with ground improvements that had been made in the previous weeks.
Forthcoming events at Hall Place include more cross country and eventers challenge in June and July.
