Second-place finish enough to secure title

DAVE WIGHTMAN narrowly ran out winner of the Remenham Angling Society’s winter league last Sunday.

The final match of the series took place at Tadley’s Whitehouse Lake where competitors had to break the ice before angling could commence.

Henry Golas drew the middle peg on the island and fished the pole at 11 and 13 metres with red maggot and after a barren first half of the match eventually landed several large skimmers and bream before adding two sizable carp for a match winning total weight of 29lb 14oz.

In second place pegged on the road bank was Wightman whose five pole caught carp totalled 20lb 2oz and in third place was Roger Howard with 18lb 14oz of carp and skimmers.

Section winners were Gramam Dodd with 8lb 9oz and Dick Shilitto with 12lb.

The final league positions proved to be close after 12 rounds and with each angler dropping their two worst results.

Wightman’s second place gave him a total of 171 points putting him ahead of the previous leader Graham Dodd on 170 only to find Dick Shilitto’s fourth place had also given him 171 points therefore tying with Wightman for top spot. The title was decided on weight over the series with Wightman edging out Shilitto 236lb 6oz to 216lb 1oz with Dodd in third and John Hobbs in fourth with 166 points.
