Artcafe opens in Whitchurch

A NEW art café has opened at the Old Rectory Stables in Whitchurch.

A NEW art café has opened at the Old Rectory Stables in Whitchurch.

It will be open every Saturday morning, offering a space for art and crafts by local and emerging artists to be displayed and sold.

Tea, coffee and home-made cakes will be sold on behalf of different charities or community groups each week. The café has been set up by Gill Williamson, of Eastfield Lane, Whitchurch, a graduate of the Winchester School of Art.

She said: “I thought it would be a good platform for people leaving university as well as local artists as it takes a long time to be adopted by a gallery. We’re quite happy to consider anything. People just need to send me pictures of the work. Every month I will change the display.”

There was a range of work on show at the first café, including acrylics, prints, oil painting, cushions and cards. The Friends’ of St Mary’s and St John’s churches sold cakes. Mrs Williamson said it was very successful, adding: “It was quite busy with standing room only at times.”

At the second café tomorrow (Saturday), there will be a jewellery display.
