Oratory student overcomes illness to win gold

THE Oratory School’s Matteo Matricardi won a gold medal for the discus and a silver for the hammer (string A)

THE Oratory School’s Matteo Matricardi won a gold medal for the discus and a silver for the hammer (string A) despite feeling unwell at the recent UK Youth development league national athletics competition held in Birmingham.

The 14-year-old, representing Reading Athletics Club, later going down with appendicitis, was asked to replace one of the team members in the discus throw (string B).

Fourteen competing clubs from around the country took part in both the lower and upper age group competitions with Reading Athletic Club coming second.

Matricardi entered the lower age group and came sixth at shot put and sixth in the 4x300m relay.
