..and nominations open for two other community awards

NOMINATIONS are open for two community awards in Benson.

The Bob Griffiths Trophy is presented annually to an individual under 18, or a youth organisation, for outstanding achievement during the previous year.

The Don Fletcher Community Award is awarded to an individual or group for outstanding support to the Benson community in the previous year. Last year, it was awarded to Lynne Powell, who leads the team of volunteers that looks after Benson’s war memorial.

The awards are made by the parish council and will be presented during this year’s annual parish meeting on May 4.

Councillors, parish staff and their close family are excluded from receiving awards.  Nominations should be emailed to the parish clerk at bensonparish.council@virgin.net or write to: The parish clerk, Benson Parish Hall, Sunnyside, Benson, Oxfordshire OX10 6LZ. The closing date is April 3.

Meanwhile, vouchers are to be presented to the war memorial gardening team for their long and sterling service.

The parish council has agreed to award £50 vouchers to three couples and a £25 voucher to an individual.

Councillor Patricia Baylis, who chairs the council’s recreation and lands committee, said the team would be giving up the work at the end of this year.

“They have always kept it looking fantastic,” she said.

Council chairwoman Pat Peers is to write to the team.
