A WOMAN from Benson celebrating after leading England’s women’s lawn bowlers to glory at the Commonwealth Games.
Gail Gilkes, 51, is the women’s team manager and saw her charges win gold in the triples event and silver in both the pairs and singles in Glasgow.
Mrs Gilkes, who is a former international, said: “I’m absolutely over the moon because the preparation was quite short due to a funding delay after the Olympics in London. I think it was the highlight of my career.
“The girls are incredible — all five of them. They are all young and vibrant and it was a great experience to spend three weeks with them and to see them achieve the goals they’d set themselves. I’m incredibly proud of them.” In the triples England’s trio of Sophie Tolchard, Ellen Falkner and former Henley Standard reporter Sian Honnor (née Gordon) thrashed Australia to take the gold.
Natalie Melmore and Jamie-Lea Winch took silver in the pairs after being beaten by South Africa in the final while Melmore lost her Commonwealth women’s singles title to New Zealand’s Jo Edwards.
