Mixed fortunes for Peppard in Manchester Unity League games

HENLEY MIXED team won their first match of the season as they triumphed 123-99 at TRENTHAMS in a three-rinks triples match.

Top rink skipped by Frank Powell with Mick Belcher at lead, Rosemary Maybury at two and Pat Hawes at three, led from the first end, and scored consistently to win 29-16.

Best triple of the day was that of Cliff Blakeway with Dilys Smith at lead and Norman Daniells at two, who won the first end and thereafter were never headed finishing winners by 25 shots to 12.

PEPPARD went down to a 4-2 rinks defeat at SUTTONS last Thursday in a six triples match.

PEPPARD won their first Manchester Unity League match of the season last Saturday as they beat PANGBOURNE 4-1 and picked up 10 points to the visitors’ two.

In a high-scoring game Peppard scored freely on four of the five rinks. The only losers for Peppard were Diana Faulkner’s rink who lost on the final end.

PEPPARD suffered reverse fortunes on Sunday in the MUL as they went down 4-1 at HURST and picked up two points to the hosts’ 10. Geof Mitson’s triple were only one shot in arrears going into the last end but lost by three shots. The only winning rink for Peppard was that of David Jennings who withstood a late rally by the hosts to win by one shot.

PEPPARD lost out 4-1 on rinks away to MAIDEN ERLEGH on Bank Holiday Monday.

Rink five saw Peppard in the lead with two ends to play, but they eventually lost by two shots.

The only winning rink for Peppard was Bill Copp’s on rink one who came home by four shots despite a late rally from their opponents.

Following a 15-year absence, SHIPLAKE renewed their fixture with DIDCOT last Saturday when they travelled to their Britwell Road green.

The visitors won on three of the five rinks and by 23 shots (105-82).

Jim Bland’s rink never let their opponents reach double figures, winning easily by 21 shots. David Bullock and Howard West won their games by five and seven respectively. Wendy Cross was against lady luck, going down by five. The other visiting skip, Daphne Jacob lost out by seven.

On Sunday SHIPLAKE ran out narrow 105-99 winners when they entertained ABINGDON in a six triples mixed friendly.

Peter Christmas, Len Mitton and Graham Kennedy were the winning skips for the villagers, winning by 23, 13 and one respectively.
