Shiplake and Watlington wrap up Oxford and District titles

In all 18 teams from Berkshire and Oxfordshire competed in two groups.

Group one was closely contested with five of the 10 teams finishing with six points and the winner Burghfield being decided on shot difference.

The group two winner was Palmer Park A who were undefeated with eight points.

Burghfield won the first two ends of the final to lead 3-0 but Palmer Park came back strongly to run out 10-6 winners.

SHIPLAKE had a successful week as they were crowned champions of this season’s Plomer Cup competition as well as winning Division 2 in the Oxford and District League.

Last Wednesday SHIPLAKE secured eight points to wrap up the Plomer Cup title with a 113-81 win at home to WATLINGTON.

Barry Lambourne cruised to a 29 shots victory against Henry Franklin while Barrie Evans was level with Bob Gilkes at the 20th before scoring two on the last end to grab victory.

Jim Bland was the other winning skip for the hosts, winning by nine against David Byers. Wendy Cross’ four were 10-2 up at the ninth before being overhauled by Gordon Hooker, who ran out winner by seven.

The best game of the evening was between Trevor Beaumont and Steve Gilkes with the home team leading by eight at the 17th, then drawing at the 20th before losing by one on the last end.

Last Thursday SHIPLAKE won promotion to Division 1 of the Oxford and District League after winning 74-62 at BICESTER in their final league match of the season. The five points that Shiplake picked up were enough to secure the Division 2 title.

The rink of Barry Lambourne trailed by seven shots after five ends before coming back to win by five. Graham Kennedy’s rink also trailed at the start before also hitting back to win by nine.

The four led by Jim Bland had an off night and were soundly beaten by 12 shots. The biggest win of the evening came from the rink of Barrie Evans, who led from the outset, and romped home by 10 shots.

SHIPLAKE suffered a 27 shot defeat against PALMER PARK as they lost four out of the five rinks to the Manchester Unity League leaders.

David Steel was level at the 13th but then scored eight in the next five ends to win by seven. Other Shiplake skips were Graham Clinch, Wendy Cross, Barrie Evans and Helen Robinson.

SHIPLAKE were soundly beaten at home to OXFORD SPORTS on Saturday in a mixed triples friendly as they went down 90-71.

Trevor Beaumont got off to a bad start but then drew level and overhauled his opponents until the end, winning by four. The only other winning skip for the villagers was captain Wendy Cross who, despite giving away three on the last end, won by a single shot. The other host skips were Phyllis Mansfield (-6), Peter Christmas (-7) and Sylvia Blackmore (-11).

WATLINGTON had a successful week as they became Division 3 champions of the Oxford and District League. The club also reached the semi-final of the Hawker Cup, a county knockout competition competed for by 35 sides.

On Sunday WATLINGTON narrowly lost out 94-91 at home to LONG CRENDON in a five rink friendly mixed fixture.

Watlington’s best rink was that of M Silvey, C Auger, N Brown and G Hooker who won 26-12.

HENLEY MEN defeated PEPPARD MEN in a four triples friendly by 78 shots to 60.

Barrie Davies’ triple, although dropping four shots on the last end, won 20-12, while Arthur Daniels’ triple, scoring a four on the last end, secured a 20-16 win. David Silvester’s triple triumphed 18-12.

Skip Tony Reid for Peppard saw his triple leading by 10 shots after five ends but lost ground to be level at 10 ends. They regained the initiative to lead by five shots after 15 ends only to allow Frank Powell’s triple to win the last three ends and draw the game.

HENLEY lost out by 112 shots to 72 in a five rink mixed friendly at HAGBOURNE.

Skip David Silvester’s triple was the only winning rink for Henley taking the last three ends to overturn deficit into a 25-20 win. Barrie Davies’ triple did the opposite by losing the last three ends to go down narrowly by three shots. The other triples found the going tough, unable to make the impression on their opponents as they would wish.

On Sunday HENLEY lost out 85-69 away at CAVERSHAM in a mixed five triples Plomer Cup match.

Henley won on two rinks to secure four league points to the hosts’ eight.

Skip Barrie Davies led his triple to an untroubled 20-11 win while David Silvester’s triple also conceded 11 shots but scored 17.

Frank Powell’s triple, leading by one shot at halfway, lost the last four ends to lose out at the finish. Both Arthur Daniels and Cliff Blakeway’s triples found their opponents difficult to overcome.

WARGRAVE won their final Kennet League match of the season after beating READING UNIVERSITY 91-54 at home. The hosts won on three of the four rinks and picked up 12 points to the visitors’ two.

In the friendly match at home against READING UNIVERSITY, WARGRAVE narrowly lost 51-49 in a four mixed triples match.

Last Saturday WARGRAVE ran out 106-81 winners at home to BURNHAM in a mixed triples match. The hosts won on four of the five mixed triples. Winning skips for Wargrave were G Whiting, K Brooks, M Pope and E Barnet.
