Hosts put on their Sunday best to thrash Desborough

HENLEY held their annual gala day on Sunday where 16 mixed triples from clubs across Oxfordshire and Berkshire

HENLEY held their annual gala day on Sunday where 16 mixed triples from clubs across Oxfordshire and Berkshire competed for the Shield Trophy.

The day’s competition, which was watched on by Henley mayor Lorraine Hillier, was played in a two leagues of eight format with the winners of each league playing in the final.

The first round of matches started at 10am with the final scheduled for 6.15pm and the steady rain for an hour or so in mid-morning failed to dampen the enthusiasm of the day.

The final was played over six ends between the Desborough triple of Graham Rogers, Catherine Rogers and John Stannard against the Caversham triple of David Ash, Dorothy Ash and David Quint. The score was level coming into the final end with Desborough winning the trophy by a single shot.

Cynthia Townley, of sponsors AB Walker and Son Ltd, presented the shield to the winners.
