SHIPLAKE entertained WOODLEY in a mixed five rink friendly where they won by 94 shots to 78 thanks mainly to the rink led by Barry Lambourne.

Dropping a five on the 16th in a tight game left Dave Webb losing by one at the finish. Leading from start to finish, Tony Reid cruised home by 11. A strong rink on paper, Graham Kennedy’s four were completely outplayed, losing by 14.

Barry Lambourne put his stamp on his game from the start, scoring a five on the first end and scored frequently after that to end up 22 to the good. Ten down at the seventh Barrie Evans fought back to finish two adrift at the end.

SHIPLAKE held their annual in-house drawn triples match last Saturday in which seven teams entered. The final was played between Barrie Evans’ triple consisting of Elaine Robinson and Melvin Stafford — who earlier in the season had won the drawn fours — and David Webb’s triple including David Lloyd and Mark Belcher.

The final was a close game with Evans going into the last end two up. Webb was holding shots in the last end but a fine bowl by Evans gave him shot. Not to be outdone Webb put the jack into the ditch to hold one but with the last bowl Evans glanced off another wood to give him a second shot and almost impossible to get out so he went down by one.

Last Sunday SHIPLAKE defeated TILEHURST 112-75 in a six triples mixed friendly.

Martin Cranstoun picked up an eight on the fourth end to lead by 14 and scored regularly for the rest of the afternoon to win by 18. Jim Bland won nine ends on the trot in the middle of the game, coming home by seven.

Matt Shepherd let a nine shot lead at the tenth slip dropping a four three and two before going down by one. Melvin Stafford kicked off with a five, but his opponents came back into the game but couldn’t catch him as he won by three.

Despite only winning five ends of the 18, David Webb only lost by four after scoring two fours and keeping his opponents down by ones and twos. Daphne Jacob led from start to finish in her game, coming home by 14 shots.

Scores (Shiplake names): J Webb, J Gutteridge, M Cranstoun 25-7; S Stretch, P Main, J Bland 17-10; K Bland, S Cranstoun, M Shepherd 18-19; A Main, P Christmas, M Stafford 19-16; D Harris, J Stafford, D Webb 13-17; E Davis, J Snook, D Jacob 20-6.
