Couple open new restaurant and bar at Watlington Club

A NEW restaurant and bar has opened in Watlington.

A NEW restaurant and bar has opened in Watlington.

The Social, run by Steve and Vicki Wood, opened on the ground floor of the Watlington Club in High Street on Friday.

The couple have run the Lamb pub in Chalgrove for the past two years and before that spent 10 years in France, where Mr Wood managed bars.

Mrs Wood, 45, who has run pubs in London and a restaurant on the Isle of Man, is the chef at The Social. She said: “There’s a taste of Korea, India, Tibet and Italy. It’s a mix of places I’ve travelled to. I love cooking food from around the world.

“We were looking for a venue where I could express myself as a chef and in a nice community, something small that would be great to start that adventure, so when this came along it fitted the bill.

“We’re really thrilled to be here and looking forward to getting going. We think Watlington is a great town and jumped at the chance.” The restaurant can seat 24 and there is a separate bar area.

Mr Wood, 40, said: “We were looking for something else to get stuck into and saw the potential in the place.

“This section of the club has been closed for a year and it just gave Vicki an opportunity to do the food she wants to do.

“She has been taught different cooking methods from all over the world and this is just stuff we have picked up along the way.” The evening menu features five starters and five mains that will change regularly and there is also a lunch menu.

Mr Wood said: “There are a lot of pubs around the area and good pub food but we want to try to offer something different. We try to get everything fresh — we use Calnan Brothers for all our meat.”
