From typewriters to Twitter — 25 years of Davis Tate

AFTER a modest start at Goring in January 1991, Davis Tate proudly celebrate 25 successful years of trading in 2016.

Joint managing directors Matthew Davis and David Tate started the partnership together by recognising they individually brought very different skill sets that complement each other to form a business model that has proven to work well.

The company name says it all — a combination of both their surnames, with both still involved in the day to day running of the company.

Estate agency in 1991 was the same as it is today — a personal and intense process involving the needs of numerous links of a chain — but the way it which it works has taken on some major changes since 1991.

It is the ability to adapt and react, but also to predict these changes, that has enabled the company to go from strength to strength over the years.



Industry challenges have come along, and at times the business has had to refocus and adjust, ultimately for the long-term benefit.

Matthew Davis says: “I remember the early days, when we knew the detail of each sale and let. As we have grown, I have taken care of the ‘back room’ function, and David inspires our ever growing customer-facing staff base.

“We’ve also grown our services from not just selling houses — we also let and manage over 2,000 homes for a worldwide database of landlords based in over 65 countries, as well as many local investors, and we offer financial services and conveyancing.”

David Tate agrees that things are very different now in terms of the technology used.

“I find myself explaining to the younger starters how we worked when we started,” he says.

“Simple things like taking photographs and waiting for them to be developed before sticking them on to pieces of paper to make up our property particulars — which were typed on a typewriter! Most things are more immediate these days with mobile phones, email, internet, and property websites — but we still find that our clients need and appreciate our expertise in all property matters.

“We have a particular skill in new homes, land and development, and have sold many hundreds of new homes throughout the area, including over 20 sites in Henley alone since 1995.”

Throughout the 25 years of the company’s existence, Matthew and David and their staff have involved themselves in the local community, with numerous associations and sponsorships for sporting venues, clubs, schools, charities and causes close to not only their hearts, but to the areas they cover and people they deal with.

Starting from the first office in Goring, the two have steadily and organically grown the company through the years. As a result they are able to offer a truly networked local estate agent with 13 high street offices throughout Berkshire and Oxfordshire, with over 80 like-minded staff who continue their ethos of being a local, knowledgeable team offering a professional service to homeowners in the area while continuing to evolve with the times.
