A HAIRDRESSER from Watlington is celebrating 46 years in the business.

A HAIRDRESSER from Watlington is celebrating 46 years in the business.

James Gerring, 73, has run Hair by James in the town since 1984 but started the business in Reading in October 1970.

He began cutting hair as an apprentice at Thomas & Co in Reading when he was 15.

Mr Gerring said: “I realised I was interested in the artistic side of things, meeting people, talking to clients and promoting the professionalism of the craft. I like to make people feel good.

“I have very loyal customers. At one time I had five lords and seven ladies as regular clients.

“I feel fantastic that people believe in me and I suppose they benefit from my ability.”

Before starting his own business, Mr Gerring managed a salon called Greco in Bell Street, Henley, from 1962 to 1969. He then moved to Marlow where he managed Robina Hair Care for a year before going it alone.

He had another branch of Hair by James in Duke Street, Henley, from 1976 to 1984, before moving to Shirburn Street, Watlington, and within a year he had extended his premises. He now employs three stylists.

Caroline Bowers, from Maidensgrove, who has been a client of Mr Gerring’s for 50 years, said: “My family moved to the Henley area in 1966 and my mother went on a search for a suitable hairdresser for me, then aged 16.

“She came up with Mr James from Greco in Bell Street, so that’s where I went and he has been cutting my hair ever since.

“James is a great hair stylist and I can’t begin to imagine what I will do when he retires.”
