Businesses pledge to stay even if M&S development goes ahead

BUSINESSES occupying a site earmarked for a possible Marks & Spencer store in Henley say they want to stay in the town.

Last week, the Henley Standard exclusively revealed that the retail giant is interested in a site next to Tesco, off Reading Road, for a development that would include a Simply Food store with 28 flats above it plus parking for residents and shoppers.

It would mean the demolition of both the AFC Henley and Henley Hockey Club clubhouses and changing rooms, the former Exclusively Ladies gym, which closed in 2010, and a council depot.

Henley Town Council, which owns the site, has been keeping businesses in the former gym building informed. These include the Chi Hair Salon and Sheer Indulgence, a health and beauty therapist.

Nicole Hewitt, who owns Chi, said: “Obviously our clients are now starting to ask questions and we’re informing them of our plans.
