Banning traffic ‘would kill trade in town’

EXTENDING the pedestrian zone in Henley town centre would kill businesses, says a shop owner.

Laurence Morris was responding to a suggestion by campaign group Henley in Transition that cars should be banned from Market Place, Duke Street, Hart Street and Bell Street up to its junction with New Street to help tackle congestion and reduce air pollution.

The group suggests having a clockwise circular one-way route around the town centre with a 20mph speed limit.

Mr Morris, who owns Laurence Menswear in Duke Street, said customers visited the shop after seeing the window when driving past.

Speaking at a public meeting at the town hall, he said: “If you go ahead with this it will kill the businesses in the town. No one will want to come any more.
