Oratory withdraw public access to gym

THE gym at the Oratory School in Woodcote has been closed to the public.

Members were told they could no longer use the facility after it moved to a new building in the school grounds on Thursday last week.

In a circular email, headmaster Clive Dytor said the independent school wanted to offer longer gym hours to its pupils. He said those who had already paid their £20 membership fee this month would be refunded.

The Oratory has just completed a £4 million upgrade of its sports facilities, including a new 25m five-lane swimming pool with new changing rooms, a viewing area, poolside showers and a cafe.

These are still open to the community, as are its refurbished squash and real tennis courts.

Public swimming will recommence in December and a new timetable will be announced shortly.

When the refurbishment began, the school bought 15 new items of gym equipment and eight rowing machines.

At the time, it said these would also be accessible to the public and it would offer different membership options depending on which facilities people wanted to use.

An Oratory spokeswoman the new gym was in a busier area of the school so there had been concerns about allowing the public access.
