AS snow paralysed the country last week Davis Tate were still operating as usual — thanks to special technology. The business is run on a single database for lettings and sales, and the system is accessed by password-secure internet, which can be reached by agents from office or home.

Also, the newly-introduced Voice Over IP telephone system, which routes all phone calls through the same computer system, means it’s business as usual, despite the bad weather.

Managing director David Tate said: “When the weather warning came out on Thursday we asked all our staff to make their way to the office nearest to their home on Friday, ensuring that nobody would be snowbound and unable to get home. As the snow got worse, our managers had discretion to close their offices, but by using IT and VOIP technology, many people could work from home.

“Unfortunately, many of the businesses we were trying to contact on Friday had simply shut up shop, and left an answering machine to deal with any enquiries.”
