Ex-model inspires yachting magazine app

A MAN from North End has co-founded a yachting lifestyle magazine app.

Sam Laurie, who races yachts professionally, created BOYD magazine with his business partner Chris Savage.

The pair met when Mr Laurie was overseeing the restoration of Nahlin, a 300ft yacht. He said: “We were talking about another project and the idea popped up. Chris used to take care of Rolex’s yachting public relations so with his experience in brand management and my experience in operating and building yachts it seemed like a no-brainer.

“BOYD is all about the lifestyle — if you are a yacht or boat owner you are going to have a nice car and go on nice holidays. As our clients are international, it made sense not to create a conventional magazine and the app is a lot more fun and more of an experience. We can do whatever we want as the only limitation is the file size.”

Mr Laurie, 30, who used to be captain of boats at Shiplake College, said it had been difficult to agree on the name for the app and they finally chose BOYD after he spotted a photograph of Sixties model Pattie Boyd at a friend’s house. He said: “There it was on the mantelpiece and I just thought it was meant to be.”

iPad users can download the app free from the app store. The magazine is bi-monthly but Mr Laurie hopes that in future content may be available on demand. The app’s next issue will include an interview with Lord Laidlaw, who owns one of the largest collections of vintage cars. For more information, visit www.boydapp.com
