Family-run pub wins award

A PUB in Watlington has been awarded pub of the season by the Campaign for Real Ale.

A PUB in Watlington has been awarded pub of the season by the Campaign for Real Ale.

The Chequers, in Love Lane, was picked as the top spring choice in South Oxfordshire.

Landlords Andy and Louise Stokes, who took over the pub two-and-a-half years ago, say the award is reward for their hard work.

Mr Stokes, a chef, said: “It’s a fantastic achievement and we are really proud.

“Before we took over the pub, it was pretty grim. We invested a lot of our own money and put in a lot of hard work to bring it back to life.

“We have built up a regular clientele and have restored the pub’s reputation as we are now very much part of the town.”

The couple, whose eldest two children, Abbie, 24, and Matt, 21, work behind the bar, hold regular events including monthly charity quiz nights and live music but say their main focus is on food.

Mr Stokes, who previously managed the Stag and Huntsman in Hambleden, said: “We make it all from scratch and pride ourselves on that.”
