Mechanic becomes his own boss — at 23

JOSH SOUTHWELL could be the youngest mechanic to run his own garage.

JOSH SOUTHWELL could be the youngest mechanic to run his own garage.

The 23-year-old, from Remenham, has set up JS Motor Works and rented half a workshop from Thames View Tyres on the Newtown industrial estate in Henley.

Josh had spent the previous five years studying at BCA and Langley College while working for a prestige car specialist in Reading.

“It is very enjoyable being your own boss,” he says. “It is just me and it has been going well so far. There is a ramp and I have an office and use of reception so there is plenty of room for the customers to sit and wait.”

Josh offers servicing and MOT repairs as well as tyre, battery and exhaust replacements. “I do anything and everything,” he says. “I have had a few nice cars here already — a few Jaguars and Porsches.

“I have tinkered with cars from when I started driving. I just like getting my hands dirty.”

Josh previously studied engineering at The Henley College and was a pupil at Shiplake College and Gillotts School.

He passed his driving test when he was 18 and his first car was a Ford Fiesta. “I didn’t have it for very long because I got bored with it,” Josh said. He now drives a Vauxhall Astra.

His favourite car is the AC Cobra and he has seen the one belonging to Reading FC chairman Sir John Madejski.
