AN electrician from Henley is bidding to become UK worker of the year.

Mark Hughes, 29, has reached the final eight of the competition, which attracted thousands of entries.

Mark, who set up his own company 18 months ago after working full-time at an electrical contractor in Reading, said: “I am both honoured and excited.

“Just to make it through to the final and be recognised for the hard work I have put in while being employed and in setting up my own business is something I never expected.

“This award could give me the opportunity to inspire and show other young people that with hard work and ambition they can achieve their career goals.”

The competition, now in its fourth year, honours workers who exemplify what doing a good job is all about.

The award will be presented at a gala event at the Madejski stadium in Reading on October 18 and the winner will receive either a Suzuki Swift car or a Suzuki GSR 750 motorcycle.
