A CONSTRUCTION firm from Oxford has won a £1.2 million contract to upgrade and refurbish the grandstand at Phyllis Court Club in Henley.

Beard will build a two-storey extension on the west elevation of the Grade II-listed grandstand and will modernise the upper and lower viewing decks that overlook the Thames.

The upper deck will be enclosed to accommodate an additional banqueting or conference suite. The project, which is due to be completed in March, will also include a new public entrance, two lift towers, a new kitchen and disabled toilets.

Graham Owen, secretary at the club, said: ?It is vital to the club members that the renovation and refurbishment of this important and historic landmark is carried out in a sympathetic manner and to the highest possible standard. Beard was chosen for its expertise and proven track record in executing projects where quality and sensitivity are the defining hallmarks.?
