Motorcycle helps shop win window display contest

A MOTORISED Santa sleigh helped a clothes shop win this year’s Henley Christmas window display competition.

Laurence Menswear in Duke Street was chosen by a panel of six judges after they had walked around the town centre on Tuesday.

Owner Laurence Morris won the Milton Gordon Perpetual Cup, a bottle of champagne and £100 while six members of staff will be treated to a three-course meal at Hotel du Vin in New Street.

The theme of this year’s competition was Charles Dickens and Mr Morris went for “old meets new” as his display featured a sleigh in the form of a Moto Guzzi motor cycle next to mannequins dressed in both Victorian and modern clothes.There was also a book and clock to represent the old and an iPad and digital clock to symbolise the new as well as some tinsel and Christmas stockings.

Mr Morris was loaned the motor cycle by Mike Rogers, the partner of shop assistant Fiona Crook.

He said: “We wanted something spectacular that would catch the imagination. We didn’t find out about the Dickens theme until after we had put the motorbike in the window so we decided to make it ‘old meets new’.

“I’m delighted to have won. The trophy will go in pride of place in the window next to the display.”

The Cannelle beauty salon in Hart Street came second and won £75 while third place and £50 went to Rive Gauche, also in Hart Street.

The competition was sponsored by the Henley Partnership, jewellers Precious Love, Milton Gordon and Hotel du Vin. The judging panel comprised organiser Carolyn Molyneux, of Delegate Services, Tom Bulgarelli, of Precious Love, Karen Viljoen, of Milton Gordon, town centre manager Peter McConnell, Mayor Stefan Gawrysiak and Mayoress Catherine Allan-Notaras.

Mr Bulgarelli said: “We picked Laurence as the winner because his display was very original and we loved the two time zones.”

The Mayor said: “The eye-catching feature of Laurence’s display was undoubtedly the motorbike. It was a wonderful feature which made people look at the window and hopefully go inside. It was a very clever display which had more than just the Charles Dickens theme.

“The overall standard of entries was good. Everyone put in a lot of effort and I was really impressed with the creativity on show.”

Laurence Menswear is one of seven Henley shops to be given training in window dressing by retail company Metamorphosis.

The Dressed for Success scheme was organised by Mr McConnell and will culminate in a second window-dressing competition later this month. The winners will be decided by a public vote at www.facebook.com/henleywindows
