AN entrepreneur says she feels proud despite narrowly missing out on a business award.

Catherine Kennard, 27, who set up recruitment firm Lovework in January, was nominated for the female entrepreneur of the year category of the Smarta 100 awards.

She finished fourth out of 10 companies following an online public vote.

Mrs Kennard, of Hofmann Mews, Henley, said: “I’m delighted that Lovework was a Smarta finalist — 15,000 companies applied and there were only 100 finalists.

“The competition was tough but that is a great sign as it shows how many exciting businesses are being set up each year in the UK.

“Sadly, I didn’t secure enough votes to win. However, fourth place is very respectable and I’m extremely pleased and proud. I was advised that the category was extremely close and so I want to say a huge thank-you to everyone who voted for me.”

Mrs Kennard spent £10,000 of her savings to set up Lovework and it has already been named one of Britain’s best 100 small businesses.

She previously worked as a consultant for recruitment firm Michael Page International and Bright Network, a social network business, as well as a science teacher.

Her husband, John, is a commercial manager for the Lotus Formula 1 team.
