Goring restaurant wins second award in a year

THE Miller of Mansfield in Goring has won its second award in less than a year

THE Miller of Mansfield in Goring has won its second award in less than a year.

The hotel and restaurant in High Street has been named pub of the season for winter 2014 by the South Oxfordshire branch of the Campaign for Real Ale. It has also been awarded two AA rosettes for its food and accommodation.

An anonymous customer nominated the business for the CAMRA certificate.

A group of branch members then visited for a couple of drinks and decided it was worthy of the title.

The award recognises pubs which have shown the greatest improvement in the previous six months. Landlords Nick and Mary Galer, who live in Streatley, took over the Enterprise Inns hotel last year and spent £75,000 refurbishing it.

It was in such a bad state that it was due to be closed as the kitchen posed a health risk.

The Galers re-opened the business in July and it came third in the River Thames Guide's best Thames local awards in November.

The hotel has at least two ales on tap at all times and often has a third as a guest drink.

Mr Galer said: "We're pleased to have won the CAMRA award as we're trying to create a good overall ambience, it's not only about the food. We're lucky to have a fairly deep cellar so our beer is kept at a constant temperature and the line to the pumps isn't that long.

"The award is recognition that we're doing all the right things."

The couple were told about their AA rosettes on the morning that an inspector finished an anonymous stay.

Mr Galer said: "It's good to know the level we're working at and it really boosts the morale of our team.

"However, I'm personally not that concerned about chasing awards. Our main aim is simply to make sure our customers are happy."
