Pop-up wine bar opens

A POP-UP wine bar is opening in Henley.

A POP-UP wine bar is opening in Henley.

Bertie’s on Friday Street will be at the bakery in the Hot Gossip coffee house tomorrow night (Saturday).

The bar is being run by wine merchants Tom Bird and Steph Urwin, who moved to Henley in September.

Mr Bird, who works for import company Wine Source, said: “It has been a dream of mine and Steph’s to do this. We’ve spent the last three years in East London surrounded by pop-ups and wanted to bring that to Henley.

“It’s also a way for me and Steph to get to know local folk and meet fellow wine enthusiasts – I’m sure there will be a few in Henley.”

The couple, who live in Harpsden Road with Mr Bird’s six-year-old son Cassius, named the bar after their border terrier Bertie.

They will offer 10 white and 10 red wines, as well as two champagnes and one rosé. , There will also be two bottled beers from Lovibonds brewery in Market Place.

Mr Bird said: “We hope this is the first night of many. The bakery is a cosy space and we can also use the outside courtyard if it’s a nice  evening.

“We are offering a selection of wines, both classic and more left-field choices. We will have Bordeaux by the glass and some of my boutique Californian wines.

“We want to cater for locals who know about wine or people who just want to come in for a glass of Sauvignon Blanc. There’s something on the list for everyone.”

Mr Bird, who has a temporary licence to sell alcohol, approached Hot Gossip owner and town councillor Lorraine Hillier several months ago and says if the first night is a success he hopes to run the pop-up bar once a month.

He said: “Lorraine has been incredibly generous and supportive and I’ve no doubt she will be there sharing a bottle with us on the night.”

The bar will be open from 6pm to 11pm.
