Inside spoon-bender’s £15m home

URI GELLER, famous the world over for his mind- and spoon-bending abilities, is selling his Sonning

URI GELLER, famous the world over for his mind- and spoon-bending abilities, is selling his Sonning home of 35 years for £15million.

Built around 50 years ago, Sonning Court was based on the design of the White House in Washington DC.

Since the Gellers first made it their home it has tripled in size and at 12,000 sq ft commands spectacular views of fields and the river Thames at its most picturesque.

The house is impressive and gracious from the moment you enter through the antique wrought-iron gates, which once belonged to an esteemed theatre in Covent Garden.

Enjoying complete seclusion and privacy, modernised gas lanterns that formerly lit Oxford Street line the driveway, and there is parking for up to 30 cars in the wide forecourt before you reach the main entrance.

Geller said: “I have lived in Sonning Court for the longest period I have lived anywhere, and the reason is this house and these grounds provide the most magical, spiritual and empowering place on the planet.

“What Sonning and this wonderful house have given us is simple — peace of mind. Whoever lives here after me will email me one day to say I’m right! It’s no wonder that some of the most famous people in the world, icons of art and legends of creativity, have felt drawn to this place. Sonning-on-Thames is mesmerising and Sonning Court a magnificent place to live.”

Sonning Court comes with nine bedrooms, including two spectacular master suites.

The ground floor includes a reception hall, two drawing rooms which lead to a magnificent large glass atrium, a panorama room, formal dining room, a study, two guest lavatories and a summer dining room. The state-of-the-art Poggenpohl kitchen, which has more than 50 storage cabinets and the latest Gaggenau appliances, leads to separate staff quarters.

The entertainment hall on the lower ground floor includes a large cinema room, bar, and fully equipped gymnasium — while the large cellar comes with a panic room and a door to the cellar and security/wine vault.

Externally, the beautiful and generous grounds also include their very own stretch of the Thames belonging to Sonning Court, plus privately owned river moorings.

There is a large enclosed L-shaped swimming pool, a wooded decking area with an outdoor Jacuzzi, tennis court and helicopter pad.

Immediately to the rear of the property are beautiful Japanese water gardens and overlooking these is a stunning glass pyramid which is the perfect space for meditation and contemplation.

Additional spaces on the estate include a Japanese pagoda pool-house and sauna, a specially-built and insulated single-level storage art house to accommodate a large painting collection, a staff chalet including gardener’s restroom, and a guest apartment.

Stephen Christie-Miller, head of Savills Henley, who is handling the sale, said: “Sonning Court is a sensational property which has been lovingly looked after and cared for by Uri Geller and his family for 35 years.

“Its coming to the market presents a buyer with an incredibly rare opportunity to acquire one of the area’s foremost landmark properties and anyone serious about buying a home in Berkshire at this level of the market should consider viewing it.”
