A BUSINESSMAN from Shiplake has won an award.

Julian Glasspole, 51, of Mill Lane, was named industry leader of the year at the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management’s sustainability and resource awards.

He is chairman of Applied Weighing International, whose head office is in Caversham, and managing director of Vehicle Weighing Solutions. The companies specialise in the design, manufacture, installation and servicing of load cells, weighing and traffic monitoring systems.

Mr Glasspole was praised for his “business flair, strong work ethic and commitment to the industry”.

He was presented with his award at a ceremony at the Marriott Hotel in Grosvenor Square, London, by Nick Hewer, an adviser to Lord Sugar on TV’s

The Apprentice.

Mr Glasspole, who attended the event with his wife Jennifer Benavidez, said: “Next to getting married it was the happiest day of my life.

“I had no idea I was going to win. I’ve only been in the industry for eight or nine years and there were doctors, CBEs and OBEs in the room and I’m none of those things — I left school with  O-levels.  Five years ago no one knew me at this event and now to be cheered as I walked on to the stage was very humbling.

“We are in an exciting growth industry and I’m proud to be a part of it.”
