RESIDENTS of Whitchurch and Whitchurch Hill are being urged to contribute towards the refurbishment of the villages’ joint war memorial.
The monument at the top of Whitchurch high street is to undergo a £9,000 restoration but Goring Heath Parish Council, which is leading the project, needs to raise £2,000 in donations.
The rest will be covered by grants including a £3,450 contribution from the War Memorial Trust.
The memorial was built in 1920 and originally bore a Celtic-style cross until it was snapped off in 1989.
Now that design is to be reconstructed by computer based on old photographs.
It’s hoped the work will be finished by November 2018, the centenary of the Armistice.
