Pair paddle 125 miles non-stop

TWO friends from Henley who met at the royal regatta have taken part in a 125-mile non-stop canoe race.

Ben Hargreaves and Elise Cope took just over 26 hours to complete the Devizes to Westminster International Canoe Race, finishing 89th out of 190 competitors in their double canoe.

That was a better result than the last year when 34-year-old Mr Hargreaves and Edmund Simpson had to pull out of the race after 17 hours due to the bad weather.

It was also a significant achievement for 41-year-old Miss Cope, a rower who hadn’t learnt to paddle a canoe before last year’s regatta, when she and Mr Hargreaves met and agreed to team up.

The duo had to paddle along the Kennet and Avon canal from Wiltshire and then downstream along the River Thames, passing through Henley in the middle of the night, before they reached the finish line at the Houses of Parliament.
