School's cash plea

A PRIMARY school is asking parents to contribute almost £200 each in order to help it through financial difficulties.

Caversham Primary School wrote to parents requesting a voluntary £190 donation, equivalent to £1 per school day.

Headteacher Ruth Perry said the school was “struggling” financially because of cuts in the education budget.

“Ninety per cent of our costs are staffing,” she said. “We have staff that have been here for many years and love working here and are therefore expensive.

“This is a decision we didn’t take lightly and it is not one we are happy to be making.”

She said the school’s Parent Teacher Association had raised money for the school over the last 40 years but this was no longer enough to plug funding gap.
