JEREMY PAXMAN has revealed he considered quitting Newsnight after the programme dropped an investigation into Jimmy Savile’s sex crimes.

The presenter, who lives in Stonor, said there was “never a serious possibility” of him departing the BBC2 programme but added: “I thought about it, of course, but in the end... I felt that loyalty commanded that you stayed.”

The decision not to run the Savile story was picked up by ITV and eventually led to the resignation of BBC director-general George Entwistle.
