A GREEK-themed supper in Sonning Common raised more than £700 for the Sue Ryder hospice in Nettlebed.

About 65 people attended the event at the village hall in Wood Lane.

The hall was decorated with Greek flags and pictures of the country’s most famous landmarks. The meal was prepared in the hall’s new £15,000 kitchen and comprised three courses with a Greek meze to start, a stifado casserole for main and honey and orange cake for pudding. The diners also took part in a quiz and raffle. Parish councillor Chrissie Phillips-Tilbury, who organises a themed meal every year with Jill Vallis and a team of volunteers, said: “It’s primarily a community thing with the money raised being incidental — it’s about getting the community together. However, to raise more than £700 this year for the Nettlebed hospice is fantastic and I was amazed. I think people are so generous because the cause touches most of us. When I took the money into the hospice they were delighted.”
