New leader takes over at village youth club

THE youth club in Sonning Common has a new leader.

THE youth club in Sonning Common has a new leader.

Club SC at Chiltern Edge School is now by run by Georgie Bird, from Peppard, who took over from Becky Jenkins on Wednesday.

Mrs Jenkins, from Sonning Common, has been in charge for about the last four years.

She is leaving to spend more time with her family — she has a daughter called Ottilie, four, and a one-year-old son called Arthur with her husband John.

Mrs Jenkins said she would miss working with the teenagers who attend the club.

She said: “I also work as a foster carer so it was interesting and enjoyable working with young people.

“They can be a good laugh. We have had some really good nights doing break dancing, circus skills, DJing and beatboxing and the Christmas parties were always good fun.”

The club runs from 7pm to 9pm on Tuesdays for children aged 10 to 13 and on Wednesday evenings for children aged 13 to 16.

About 30 youngsters attend each week. Most come from the village but some travel from Emmer Green and Caversham.

Miss Bird, 20, has previously run leisure camps for children during school holidays and after-school clubs at St Joseph’s College in Reading.

She said: “I have worked a lot with kids and I was looking for a job while I was doing a training course to be a physiotherapist, so this job fits perfectly. Kids are a lot of fun to work with and I’ve worked with a range of ages.

“I want to run things they are going to enjoy and that are relevant.”
