Choir festival raises £1,300 for charity

MORE than 120 singers took part in the fifth annual choir festival at St Mary’s Church on Saturday.

Thirteen choirs performed and there were solos from Rebecca Bell and Marion Olsen.

Among the music was Vivaldi’s Gloria and a version of Ave Maria by Hungarian composer Zoltan Kodaly. The choirs were conducted by Dr Jonathan White, a former music tutor at the University of Oxford, while David Old played the organ.

Organiser David Butler said: “It went extremely well. It was equally as good as any of the other four we have had with some extraordinarily good choirs who have worked very hard.

“The soloists were also fantastic and overall it was a great evening.” The event, which was attended by about 150 people, raised more than £1,300 for Macmillan nurses.
