Pub regulars cycle to seaside in aid of skate park

TEN cyclists from Sonning Common have raised £2,000 for the village skate park project.

A team of regulars from the Butcher’s Arms pub in Blounts Court Road completed a sponsored bike ride to Brighton, 89 miles away.

They set off from the pub at 8am on a Saturday and arrived on Brighton seafront 12 hours later.Robert Blues, who runs the pub with his wife Ellie, was joined by nine regulars including Russell King, Vincent Panel, Nicola Thomas, Chris Buckett, Scott Jackson, Peter Sheen, Tom Franklin, Anna Were and Toby Williams.

He said: “It went very well. We had a slight detour which added about 15 miles to the journey so I think our map reading skills need a bit of brushing up but we got there.Everyone cycled the full distance and really enjoyed it. We were hoping to raise £1,000 but we are nearer the £2,000 mark and money is still coming in so we are gobsmacked.”

The proceeds will go towards the £95,000 skate park, which is due to be built at Bishopswood Sports Ground. Parish councillor Carole Lewis, who chairs the skate park committee, said: “They have obviously worked exceedingly hard, both in terms of fundraising and the physical effort involved.
