One man and his dog to paddle 135 miles

A MAN is to paddle his canoe 135 miles along the Thames with only his dog for company.

Sean Bedford, 45, from Rockwell End, near Hambleden, is raising money for Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital in London.

He will begin at Cricklade, Wiltshire, on June 27 and hopes to finish in Teddington nine days later, depending on the weather conditions. Mr Bedford will be accompanied by 10-year-old Blue, a Pyrenean sheepdog, and the pair will camp at night.

Their route will take them through Lechlade-on-Thames, Abingdon, Didcot, Wallingford, Goring, Henley and on to Eton, Weybridge and Walton-on-Thames, passing through 47 locks. Mr Bedford said: “I only took up canoeing earlier this year and wanted to do something involving the canoe that was worthwhile. I also wanted a bit of an adventure and something that I haven’t done before.

“This will be wild camping so it’ll be wherever I can find to sleep. I’ve got the tent, sleeping bag and stove and I’ll take food for the whole nine days. I’m going to be completely self-sufficient so the only thing I will need is water and I can get that at the locks.
