SIXTEEN Royal Navy and Royal Air Force personnel from 28 Squadron set off from RAF Benson on Monday on a 1,000-mile cycle ride to Milan.

They are raising funds for the RAF Benevolent Fund, Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity and Forces Children’s Trust and have a target of at least £7,000. The team of 14 riders and two support staff have nicknamed their endeavour Merlin 1000 in honour of the aircraft they fly and the total number of miles they will each cycle.

The cyclists are scheduled to finish next Friday.

They were set off from RAF Benson by Group Captain Nigel Colman, station commander, watched by family, friends, colleagues and Ben Elephant, mascot of the RAF Benevolent Fund.
