CELEBRITY baker Mary Berry was guest of honour at the Ewelme Village Show yesterday (Monday).

Berry judged the cake competition, which was won by Judith Hall?s victoria sponge, and posed for photographs with fans at the show.

The food writer, 78, who is a judge on the BBC Two programme The Great British Bake Off which airs tonight, also signed copies of the show?s cookery book for baking enthusiasts.

Berry has published more than 70 cookery books, the first in 1970, and will release her autobiography next month.

In it, Berry recounts how she suffered from polio aged 13, which saw her isolated in a Bath hospital for a month, unable to make contact with anyone, including her worried parents.

She was then moved to a children?s ward for ten weeks, sharing the room with tuberculosis sufferers and often exposed to the elements when the sliding door was left open overnight.

Berry was just one of the attractions at the well-attended show. Along with a tent of award-winning cakes, fruit and preserves, there was also a classic car display and stalls selling local wares.
